  • I do not own the rights to this video. It is owned by MTV. I am simply posting this for people to see how great MTV was and for you to see how it all started.

On August 1, 1981, at 12:01 a.m., MTV launched with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," spoken by John Lack, and played over footage of the launch of Apollo 11. Those words were immediately followed by the original MTV theme song, a crunching classical tune composed by Jonathan Elias and John Petersen, playing over photos of the Apollo 11 moon landing, with the flag featuring MTV's logo changing various colors, textures, and designs.

Now-a-daze, the "M" stands for 4 year old pregnant crack whores who suck off Russians to rig elections to keep Juul from selling flavored nicotine to idiots who keep sending in retarded videos to the "show" Ridiculousness.

This was great, but I wanted to see the beginning of "Video Killed The Radio Star" as it happened on that day.

Every morning I had MTV on while getting ready for school, only real way to watch music videos back then. Youtube and streaming killed MTV :(

The launch of MTV is more believable then the moon landing though. Lol

To those who complain about MTV not showing videos, try Youtube. Just search for the video you want to see and voila...odds are somebody posted it. And best of all, no overpaid, egotistical VJ filling up airtime with their babble.

My father said we couldn't watch MTV. "Hold on to 16 as long as you can, changes come real soon makes women and men". It was a blur and dad was wrong. I'm fine.

I am very old but to me the 80's may have been the best decade of music ever and MTV was there to bring it to us Video killed the radio star.
