Funny gag in "Blazing Saddles" will soon be completely over everyone's head. When "Mongo" first rides into town one of the townspeople, possibly Hispanic, exclaims in fear "Mongo! Santa Maria!"

For those wondering, the musicians are bassist Victor Venegas, drummer Ray Lucas, percussionist Osvaldo Martinez, conga and bongo player Mongo Santamaria, pianist Rodgers Grant, flutist Mauricio Smith, saxophonists Bobby Capers and Pat Patrick, and trumpeter Marty Sheller.

I remember hearing “Watermelon Man” on my transistor radio I kept under my pillow, with that infernally repeated commercial for the “De Carlo Land Agency” on 77WABCam.

Many R&B bands back in the 60's would open with an instrumental. This was a great one.
